Jubilee Debt Campaign Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Jubilee Debt Campaign - Essay Example There have been claims that these debts have been a continuation of the legacy of colonialism in the way they are given out without looking at the way in which they will be repaid. 1 The jubilee campaign has been a debt calling for eth cancellation of more the $400 billion which the developing nations owe to the G8 countries. It is a campaign that has taken a moral direction on the way these debts have been issued and the legality of these debts in light of the world unequal distribution system of the world. The campaign has been calling for the cancelation of the debts in light of the fact that while the whole nation continue to be paying for the debts, most of them are not used to build the interest of the while nation but rather they are channel to build the interest of the few individuals who are in the leadership of these countries. These debts therefore have a lot of negative impact on women and children, education, climate change, heath sector and the general welfare of the society. The campaign has realized some progress as some debts totaling to $88 billion has been cancelled off but there is a lot that is to be done. The main assertion of the campaign is that most of the debts can be attributed to irresponsible lending decision. Although the developing nations have also been blamed for the increased debt d... The paper look at the case of the helping the poor nation and the moral issues that surrounds. Then it will look at how the developing world has accumulated these debts and the role that developed nation has played. Finally it will set the agenda on what could have been done in order to reverse the situation. Debt as a continuation legacy of colonialism The history of debt in the developing nations has been described as legacy of great siphoning off of their resource by the international financiers. It has been described as unjust process which is used by the rich and developed nation in order to siphon the resource of the developing nations and to ensure that the developing nations live under the shadow of their will. It is a process that has been designed in order to perpetuate itself using a diabolical mechanism where debt replicates in an even greater scale to create cycle that can only be broken by the use of debt relief mechanisms. 2 There have been claims that the process of debt creation in the developing world has been result from unjust transfer to them the debts that they have been accumulated in a colonizing state. To support this argument there is a lot of evidences that shows that a massive $59 billion in form of external debts to the developing world was transferred to the independent state when they were given independence in 1960. The debts have been increasing at a great rate of about 14 percent since then as a result of the unilaterally set rate. This has led to high rate of increase of these debts. Even before the new independent state got time to organize their economies, there were their lenders knocking on the door to get their money back. In order to understand the cycle of debt well,

Status of commercialization in sports Research Proposal

Status of commercialization in sports - Research Proposal Example Settlement for the topic was due to various reasons that will be prioritized in the research. Adequate knowledge of what is meant by commercialization of sports will be tackled. The researcher and the readers need to have a good knowledge of the topic and the general idea of what it entails as it provides proper guidance for the research (Cummings, Lofaso & Cummings,  2010). The other area that will be tackled will be the advantages and shortcomings of commercializing different sports. Identification of similarity or the difference between the commercialization of different is a crucial aspect of the research in the quest to determine both the negative and positive effects of the same. The use of relevant examples is essential in such a scenario to ensure the point is well understood and intentions clear. Also, the methods of commercialization and the relevant bodies or rather bodies associated with the commercialization are paramount in the research (Humphreys & Howard,  2012). The research has several objectives that provide guidance while carrying out the data collection process. Establishment of the various reasons behind commercialization is the first goal of the study. The increased rate of the commercialization raises eyebrows and thus the need to understand the driving force behind the act. Determination of the positive effects of the commercialization of sports is the other objective. In comparison to other business opportunities, sports such as soccer and American Football have hit top bars and indicating that there is a plethora of benefits that accrue from the same. It is a critical objective in this research as the findings from this research help determine whether the process is of an additional value to the society (Ribowsky, 2012). Furthermore, it is equally essential to analyse the adverse impacts of

Ventilator associated pneumonia Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Ventilator associated pneumonia - Essay Example This element decreases VAP by decreasing the risk of aspiration of gastrointestinal secretions and also oro-naso-pharyngeal secretions and also by improving ventilation of the patient through higher spontaneous tidal volumes when compared to supine position (Safer Healthcare Now, 2011). Hospitals in Canada can implement this component by implementation of a strategy that ensures head end elevation like documentation of the intervention in nursing flow charts at regular intervals, as a topic of discussion during multidisciplinary daily rounds and as documentation on goals sheet. A protractor must be brought into the ICU to demonstrate the nursing staff as to how 45 degrees elevation looks like. A piece of colored tape must be pasted on the wall behind the bed of the patient to ensure compliance during ventilator checks. Another implementation strategy would be to include a specification for monitoring of head of the bed by mechanical devices. An environment must be created where all h ealth professionals like orderlies and radiology technicians are encouraged to notify the nursing as to whether the head of the bed is elevated. ... The staff must be encouraged and motivated for compliance (Safer Healthcare Now, 2011). 2. Daily performance of readiness to extubate by interruption of sedation and spontaneous breathing trial This is done to decrease the duration of mechanical ventilation and also early extubation which decreases VAP. This also decreases exposure to ventilator-circuit endotracheal tube device (Safer Healthcare Now, 2011). This element can be implemented by introducing a process which temporarily interrupts sedation every day at an appropriate time, like before rounds, to reappraise the neurocognitive ability of the patient, to assume a breathing pattern that is viable and to ascertain needs for analgesia and sedation. Sedation scale must be used to prevent under-sedation. These must be standardized for all mechanically ventilated patients and both these strategies must be linked into the protocol of weaning process. Non-invasive ventilation can be used as a strategy to liberate patients from mechan ical ventilation. Compliance must be discussed every day during rounds and compliance must be used to motivate and encourage the staff (Safer Healthcare Now, 2011). 3. Use of oral tubes rather than nasal tubes for tracheal or stomach access. This reduces the risk of nosocomial sinusitis and thus decreases the risk of VAP (Safer Healthcare Now, 2011). This element can be incorporated in the hospitals by making orotracheal intubation the standard protocol for mechanical ventilation. In all patients receiving mechanical ventilation for more than 24 hours, orogastric tube must be placed for gastric decompression and feeding rather than nasogastric tube and this must also be included in the protocols in not only ICUs, but

The role of women in society and the church

The role of women in society and the church Introduction I am going to discuss the role of women in the church and contentious issues, particularly when the passages such as 1 Timothy 2:11-14, and 1 Corinthians 13:34 talk about women should be silent in church. And slightly discuss the women in the society. The Role of Women in the Society Women in the modern society Women today are coming forth in modern social trends. This feminism may appear too extreme and rather threatening to the male ego, yet the role of women in current society has drastically changed. Perhaps there is some explanation for their actions. Women are now regularly performing duties that were traditionally assigned to males. They are attempting to fight the continuing stereotype established during the earlier part of the century. The pretty image of the perfect fifties wife is rapidly evolving into a more suitable projection to accommodate their new role in todays society. More than two generations ago, a girl was expected to abandon her academic pursuits and assume the role of a housewife. She would completely devote herself to the preservation of the female-oriented position of homemaker. As time has progressed, fluctuations in the economy have made it necessary for a woman to obtain a career in order to fit in the society. Strange as it may seem, the family roles have not changed much in todays society. While girls and women (not only Polish) have more opportunities in home based employment, the traditional roles of women are still quite evident. They are still the caring provider and nurturer of young infants and children, the comforter for the crying child and the feminine presence of the household. While the husbands role has diversified into more household chores and the cooking and cleaning up responsibilities, they are still considered the head of the household. In the absence of the man, can the woman really be like the man? I think yes. There are women who are capable in finance, Do-It-Yourself fixtures and fittings, even being a capable single parent and bread winner. In this respect, women will have to be like the man. Of course, the woman cannot match the physical strength of the man. The other aspect of thinking like the man is a definite no. This is through experience. Women generally look at the details and forget about the overall picture. They have the capability of juggling more than one issue at a time unlike the man. And she is more tempered to her feelings. And because of this, the focus is not there to make a sound judgment. Men on the other hand, are more focus and look at one thing at a time. They are less prone to feelings and therefore they are better at seeing the overall picture. I think for this matter, a man balances up the woman and vice versa. If we look at the example of a family with the wife who tries to be like the man, we have a situation where the roles are different now, because of the presence of the man. Man, no matter how gifted or ungifted have a certain ability to say that he is the man in the house. And for the wife to usurp his position there will be certain unrest in the overall relationship. This may not be currently evident but it will become an issue at a later stage. Subtle hints are always there and if the wife chooses not to suspect or confront the situation, it will lead to a crisis. Men and Women in Worship. I will begin by what Paul stated concerning men and women in worship that men should adopt a respectful attitude as they pray and also women should pray with an altitude of respect, just like men. It might be a different thing in that church which Paul was addressing. Women face particular problem, in that it is easy for them to become preoccupied with their appearance and with looks that take time to achieve. It’s true that Descent and Honorable behave matters far more to God than jewels and expensive clothes. Beside if Christian women who posses Gods worship are too concerned about their external appearance they will forget the essential and will have neither the time of doing good deed. It’s important to emphasize that Paul was not forbidding beautiful jewelry or lovely hair styles to all Christian women of all time was warning against becoming so attached to clothes and fashions and forgets the most important thing that is pleasing God by doing good deeds. Paul Advice Women to Be Quite During Teachings This advice has raised much debate among Christians in Africa, especially since the raise of feminist theology that asserts among other things, the right of women express themselves. Certain versions of the Bible have tried to get to get around the problem of translating 2:11 in a more acceptable way while still being true in the spirit of the text. The massage translates this as i dont let women to take over and tell men what to do. This translation assume that Paul give this advice because women were talking positions of authority and even of dominance over men, which was unacceptable in the culture of that day. The requirement for silence in association with teaching may also indicate that the women were talkative during time of teaching and worship. Paul advice women to be silence not because of inferior, but as a sign of their submission to men and of acknowledgment of mens authority. They will then be obeying the Oder that God established at creation. In applying this instruction in Kenya today, we need to think carefully about how women express their submission to authorities and to men. THE ROLES OF WOMEN IN CHURCH IN KENYA TODAY The role of women in the church is a contentious issue, particularly when passage 1 Timothy 2:11-14 is a regarded as laying down absolute rather than general principles within a particular culture. The focus should fall on the biblical call for all human beings to decern what is the will of God in their live ( roman 12:2) Jesus radical mission of transformation for liberation. Means that women and men are equally called and empowered to participate in the same mission in the church. What women and men do depends on our obedience to the guidance and empowerment of the Holy spirit. Because of the entrenched culture and sexist attitude and practices, and the male-dominated leadership in many of the churches especially in the Maasai land, women in Kenya church have critical and prophetic role to play in stirring waters and speaking the truth by asserting their God given humanity and gift not for their own sake of integrity of the gospel. many women in Kenya church have continue to claim their full potential and have taken leading roles. like the Samaritan woman ( John 4:1-42) when women in the Kenya church drink the water offered by Jesus, they go out to witness and spread the word of truth in their homes, villages, communities and churches with determination, boldness, courage and humility. for example the like of Teresia Wairimu, Esther Obasike, Bishop Magret Wajiru and many of great women of God which some have founded churches , preached, taught christian theology seminary schools and translated scripture into different languages in Kenya. Where the church have listen the voice of the Holy Spirit , they have realize that scripture grant women a place in all ministries of the church. And women have been rightly ordeined to serve in all ministries of the church. Conclusion A careful examination of the Bible will yield an understanding of God’s intent for women and men to be full and equal partners to serve and worship Him. Perhaps the easiest point to make and understand is that there are many biblical examples of women leaders. The following women were divinely called to lead, were affirmed by their religious communities, and were specifically recorded in scripture as part of God’s revealed truth. A few examples: Miriam – prophet; played major role in Exodus; led worship singing and dancing. Deborah – prophet; judge; led Israeli troops into battle with Barak Lydia – business woman who became a central leader in the Philippian Church Priscilla – helped Paul establish churches at Corinth and Ephesus; corrected Apollo’s preaching Phoebe – deacon; commended by Paul for her service to the church If by design God created women not to be leaders, then he would be going against his own order and intent to place women in leadership; but God does not violate His own design. In the beginning humans were created male and female in equality and partnership reflecting the image of God both individually and together as a plural unit. The sequence of creation does not signify importance or superiority. Adam is not superior because he is first; Eve is not the new and improved model. Instead, Eve is called Adam’s helper. The word helper, however, is not used as an indication of rank as in â€Å"a boss and an assistant.† The Hebrew word is ‘ezer and is also used to describe God by Moses in Exodus 18:4 when he says, â€Å"My father’s God was my helper: he saved me from the sword of Pharaoh.† Since God is called a helper also, we need to maintain the original elevated biblical definition of this word, and not submit to a culturally lowered interpretation in our understanding of God’s creation design Adam and Eve are both punished for disobeying God. One of the consequences of Eve’s sin was a distorted relationship with Adam. However, God in his mercy promised a reversal of the fall and restored divine and human relations through Jesus Christ. Restoration in Salvation: Salvation through Christ reverses or removes the punishment of judgment. Individuals are restored to a relationship with God. While we live in a world where the effects of sin are still playing out, believers are now members of the Kingdom of God where equality in him is restored. But even before Christ, faithful women were already filling places of leadership indicating that one’s relationship with God has an impact that brings about a change on the judgment meted out at the fall. The Effects of Baby Boomers on Social Security and Healthcare

Expected Lifetime Costs of Significant â€Å"Aging Shocks† for a 65-Year-Old Today Population Needing Long-term Care If we also look at another issue as to why long-term care could be a large burden is the rapid inflation in expenditures for long-term care in recent years. Medicare and Medicaid expenditures on nursing home care were $9 billion in 1980, more than doubling to $25 billion by 1990, and doubling again to $54 billion by 1999. Likewise, Medicare and Medicaid expenditures on home health care increased from less than $1 billion in 1980 to $5 billion in 1990 and to $16. billion in 1999, down from a high of $17 billion in 1996 (Health Care Financing Administration 2000; Heffler et al. 2001). With this we can also see that out of pocket expenses have not been lowered at all either. Also there is a concern about long-term care costs that comes from a report by Curran, McLanahan, and Knab (in review) it suggest that children who experience divorce may be less willing or abl e to care for their aging parents. Their data indicate that the probability of an elderly person perceiving an availability of emotional support from his or her children is reduced from 71 percent for those who marry once and remain married to 56 percent for those who many and divorce. Which would make these elderly Baby Boomers more apt to have to depend on Social Security or some sort of governmental supplement? {draw:frame} There remain some substantial challenges to getting ready to meet the long-term care needs of Baby Boomers. Basically there are four areas of concerns that need to be focused on: Creating a finance system for long-term care that works Building a viable and affordable community-based delivery system Investing in healthy aging in order to achieve lower disability rates, and Recharging the concept of family and the value of seniors in American culture. There are four sources of payments currently finance long-term care services for the elderly: Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, and out-of-pocket payments. The federal Medicare program pays for approximately 24 percent of all long-term care costs (Congressional Budget Office 1999). In principle, Medicare does not cover custodial long-term care, but rehabilitation care. The federal/state Medicaid program is probably the most important player in the long-term care financing system. Medicare may if you will, be considered as a back up to the Medicaid program. Basically what Medicare does is help pay for the eldest and more serious conditions in the elderly who are in a situation that they have little to no money.

Dramatist of Greek Tragedy essays

Dramatist of Greek Tragedy essays There were many dramatists in the years of B.C. There were three of them that were known more than any other. Aeschylus, Euripides, and Sophocles. These three guys are much alike but they also have their differences. The "Father of Tragedy," Aeschylus was born in 525 B.C. in the city of Eleusis. When Aeschylus first began writing, the theater had only just begun to evolve. Plays were little more than animated oratorios or choral poetry supplemented with expressive dance. A chorus danced and exchanged dialogue with a single actor who portrayed one or more characters primarily by the use of masks. (Aeschylus Moon struck bookstore imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/clsc3.htm). Most of the action took place in the circular dancing area or "orchestra" which still remained from the old days when drama had been nothing more than a circular dance around a sacred object. (Aeschylus Moon struck bookstore imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/clsc3.htm). It was a huge leap for drama when Aeschylus introduced the second actor. He also attempted to involve the chorus directly in the action of the play. Aeschylus directed many of his own productions, and according to ancient critics, he is said to have brought the Furies onstage in so realistic a manner that women miscarried in the audience. (Aeschylus Moon struck bookstore imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/clsc3.htm). Although Aeschylus is said to have written over ninety plays, only seven have survived. His life laid the groundwork the dramatic arts would need to flourish, and by the time of his death, there were two notable successors ready to take his placeSophocles and Euripides. In addition, Aeschylus left behind two sons who would carry on his dramatic legacy, and one of them, Euphorion, would even claim first prize at the City Dionysia, defeating both Sophocles and Euripides in 431 BC.(Aeschylus Moon struck bookstor...

Osiris and Iris Creation Myth Essays

Osiris and Iris Creation Myth Essays Osiris and Iris Creation Myth Essay Osiris and Iris Creation Myth Essay GiGi Orphali 9-17-12 p. 7 Osiris and Isis Creation Myth Mythology opens up a hidden gate of information about the lives of ancient peoples. Through it, modern people have insight to the beliefs and culture of a civilization long since passed. No better example of this exists than the Egyptian tale of Osiris and Isis. According to this tale, when the world first started it was ruled by the benign god Osiris and his equally generous wife, the goddess Isis. Together they ruled the earth and through this time it was a utopia. Crops prospered, people spoke to each other in poetry, and there were no wars. It remained this way until Osiris was trapped by his wicked brother Seth, who then took full control of the world, exposing humanity to its first taste of heartache. Osiris was eventually freed and Seth dethroned, but when it came time to destroy Seth Isis didn’t have the heart. She let him live, and though he still exists he is now a lowly god with less power. This explains the Egyptian belief of why there has to be good and evil in the world. It also explains that since Seth has less power than Osiris, good will always trump evil. The Egyptians were so rare in their day because of their positive outlook on death. While other civilizations around them looked on to death in a craven manner, Egyptians embraced the beauty of the afterlife and the riches to come. All this stemmed from the belief that Osiris, an oh-so-benevolent god, would make their afterlife paradise, as he had once done here on earth. Because the afterlife is ruled by a kind god, it also explains the way to get there. Egyptians believe that through morality and kindness, they will forever be joined with their princely god in paradise. Egyptian culture stressed love and loyalty between husband and wife and that is clearly expressed throughout this myth. The story of Osiris and Isis is punctuated with Isis’s undying devotion to her husband and her willingness to go above and beyond to find him. Though Osiris is lost for many years on more than one occasion, Isis never stops searching for him. Even when he is sent to the afterlife, she follows. Readers can assume from the numerous examples of Isis’s loyalty that this was an important value to the ancient Egyptians. Through Isis modern people can see what the ideal Egyptian wife must have been. Osiris and Isis is a myth that has carried on through the ages, portraying an excellent well of information on what Egyptian culture was. Modern readers can see what the ideals and beliefs of a place (beliefs that are still followed today) which give a better understanding than any history book can. Ancient Egyptians held in high esteem what their gods taught and were quick to follow their example. Their conclusions on the afterlife, polytheistic pantheon and good vs. evil are all expressed in this myth. This myth offers us a glimpse into a long ago world, and is perhaps, along with the pyramids and ancient temples, one of the greatest gifts the ancient Egyptians have given modern society.

Best Nursing Practice for Newborns with Jaundice Essay

Best Nursing Practice for Newborns with Jaundice - Essay Example The most common intervention is phototherapy which is initiated soon after the level of bilirubin reaches phototherapy zone. Infants receiving phototherapy need extra nursing care so that therapeutic phototherapy is provided and the baby does not feel chill or burn. Breast feeding is encouraged during phototherapy and some babies may benefit with fiberoptic pad underneath. The irradiation of the light must be measured. Nurses must maintain input and out because these babies are at risk of dehydration. Daily weighing is another method of monitoring hydration. War vietnam-Iraq - Essay Example These two conflicts while located in different regions of the world have a lot in common as well as a lot different. For the Vietnamese however the conflict had been continuous since 1945 when the Viet Minh began a campaign against French troops based in Haiphong. It was not until the Viet Minh attacked Dien Bien Phu and decimated the French forces that the United States started to send political convoys over.1 In 1961 President John F. Kennedy orders support for the South Vietnamese and begins to send military advisors and support personnel. The first official combat mission conducted by the United States against the Vietcong was 12 January 1962 where United States Helicopters were used to fly South Vietnamese to Saigon in an attack. This also marked the beginning of a ten year conflict that resulted in more than 3 million American serving in the war, 58,000 American dead, and over 2000 missing in action.2 The war while officially over in March of 1973, actively carried on until 30 April 1975 and for many veterans is still raging internally. Similar Iraq has been in conflict both internally and with external powers since 1920 and the fall of the Ottoman Empire. The United States did not become directly involved until Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990. On 9 August 1990 United States troops land in Saudi Arabia and in January 1991 the Persian Gulf conflict began. Between 1991 and 2002 when the United States launched their next full campaign against Iraq, the United States attempted to peacefully end the hostilities but the President Saddam Hussein continues to disobey the regulations and puts Iraq on President Bush’s axis of evil list. On 11 October 2002 the United States congress authorized an attack on Iraq. That next spring on 19 March 2003 President Bush declares war. While as of December 2011 the United States is not actively engaged at war in Iraq, there are still military and political advisors to aid the Iraqi military and government. To date more than 4,400 soldiers have been killed. The Vietnam conflict enlisted those soldiers straight out of high school who thought that their government was right and the war was just.3 It was not until the soldiers hit ground that they realized that corruption, lies, and manipulation were more important than the mission. The mission was to liberate the South Vietnamese against the communist North. The truth was that women, children, and other civilians were being killed in the process. This was the first war that a large number of civilians were killed on a daily basis. Rather the reasons were greed, hatred, or accident, soldiers started to realize that this was not their father’s war. The media while censored was still able to get many of these images back to the United States were the civilian attitude of the war changed. The Iraqi conflict was similar in that many people believed both military and civilian that this was a righteous conflict. Protecting an ethnic group of people from a warlord seemed worthy. As the conflict continued, especially with George W. Bush as President it became clear that this war was not just about cleaning out a bad government but there also ulterior motives. Gas, national resources, and money were all involved in this seemingly straight forward conflict. Soldiers coming home from this conflict are having the same
